El Movimiento Familiar Cristiano en la ciudad de México (1958-1971): acuerdos y desacuerdos con la jerarquía católica

This text aims to present the relationship between the Mexican Catholic hierarchy and the Movimiento Familiar Cristiano (MFC) during its first thirteen years of life. MFC has not been studied enough as part of the history of the Mexican Church, even though its performance in the wide-spreading anti-communist campaign in Mexico was fundamental. Through the lay auditors of the Council, José and Luz Álvarez Icaza, MFC was present at that historic event for the universal Church. It has been consulted archival sources from Centro Nacional de Comunicación Social, Acción Católica Mexicana, and personal archives of some of the members. Interviews conducted several years ago with members of this organization were also recovered. Catholic hierarchy and members of MFC were initially totally in tune, as the anti-Communist campaign may show, but prior understanding evolved to a significant disagreement with the publication of the encyclical Humanae vitae. The members' profiles changed from an educated middle class with homogeneous socioeconomic conditions to less favored social sectors, which were more docile to hierarchical dictates. © 2025 Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra.
