Resumen:
The search for natural sources to treat chronic diseases (cancer) has led to bioprospective evaluations of plant species with cytotoxic activity due to their secondary metabolites. The cytotoxic potential of plant extracts of the Sechium sp. genus in inducing cell death by apoptosis was evaluated. Extracts of three genotypes were evaluated, in two myeloid cell lines (J774 and P388) and normal CD-1 mouse hematopoietic cells, to show that the extracts induce cell death by apoptosis and not by a different one, since this process involves the oligonucleosomal fragmentation (180 to 200 bp) of genomic DNA as an important and irreversible biological marker of the process. The evaluation indicated a decrease in the density of leukemia cell lines in a differentiated manner between extracts; detection in the translocation of the phospholipid phosphatidylserine (PS), as an indicator of the "early" apoptotic process in both cell lines, and cell death by apoptosis through the fragmentation of genomic DNA (oligonucleosome fragments in cell lines of mice with leukemia, but not in normal hematopoietic cells). The extracts expressed phosphatidylserine and induced DNA fragmentation causing cell death by apoptosis, which suggests its therapeutic application. Genotypes are currently exploited massively with rural producers. © 2022 by the authors. Licensee AEIPRO, Spain.
