FOLICULOGENESIS IN SIX SPECIES OF LIZARDS AND SNAKES OF THE SQUAMATA ORDER (REPTILIA)

Resumen:
The Squamata order is the widest and most diverse among vertebrates and
their species are important in the food chain, so its protection and
conservation is essential. This has motivated an interest in their modes
of reproduction, being the morphological and ultrastructural changes
that accompany the oocyte during vitellogenesis, very useful for
understanding the process of accumulation of yolk and its implications
in the development of embryos. The main goal of this work is to describe
the follicular cells that accompany the oocyte in the stages of
vitellogenesis in six species of Cuban reptiles, three lizards: Anolis
homolechis, Leiocephalus carinatus and Hemidactylus mabouia, and three
snakes: Cubophis cantherigerus, Caraiba andreae and Tropidophis
melanurus. The ovaries of adult females were analyzed by light field
optical microscopy and transmission electron. The results show that in
lizards the previtellogenic follicles have a stratified follicular
epithelium or granular layer with three cell types: small, intermediate
and large, typical of other Squamata females. The large cells are
pyramidal, with mitochondria and a prominent nucleus with one or two
nucleoli, visible to the MET. The intermediates are oval with large
nuclei, as in the small ones, which have very condensed chromatin. The
ovary of the snakes at the MET reveals the presence of fat and pigments.
This could be a strategy in the absence of larger fatty bodies due to
the length of its body. Follicular cells flatten at the end of
vitellogenesis.
