Resumen:
Pentoxifylline is a haemorheologic agent that increases the erythrocyte flexibility, decreases blood viscosity and platelet aggregation. Double blind trials have been carried out vs placebo in 30 patients with leg ulcers, 5 dropped out. The patients were evaluated every four weeks during 6 months taking pentoxifylline 1,200 mg/day orally, 400 mg three times a day. In the pentoxifylline group 25% with total cure, 40% with improvement, 8.3% without changes and 16.6% with worsening was observed. In the placebo group: 10% with total cure, 20% with improvement, 60% without changes and 10% with worsening. A significant improvement was presented in 74.9% in the pentoxifylline group while in the placebo group only 30%; total cure in 25% with medicine, and only 10% with placebo. As side effects we observed: anorexia, nausea and gastric acidity. A rapid notable decrease of pain and lymphostasis, was also reported in our study.
