Resumen:
One way to reduce costs in industrial processes is the reduction of fresh water consumption. It is possible to reduce fresh water consumption in unitary operations through the reuse of discharged water from operations. Water reuse depends on contaminant concentration limits imposed by each operation. Contamination levels of effluents can be modified by mixing effluents from different operations or with the addition of fresh water from primary sources. This way, acceptable contaminant levels can be obtained to be used in operations. The design of this type of systems requires the definition of which operations must be interconnected, the amounts of fresh water required in each operation and in the interconnections, and the treatment level required to reduce the contaminant load to acceptable levels. The definition of the values for all parameters involved depends on several criteria, oftentimes conflicting and incommensurable. In the best cases, designs of this type of systems are made considering the water pinch approach with a single criterion, generally the reduction of the total influent of fresh water. This paper presents an optimization model for the design of this kind of systems considering two of the criteria involved. The criteria considered are: a) minimization of the total influent flux to the system and b) the minimization of the infrastructure cost. The Pareto set is obtained using an heuristic approach based on the solution of the optimization problem as a Markov decision process. The solutions where compared with those obtained using a weighted function approach solved with GAMS.
