Modulation of visual input by pupillary mechanisms

Resumen:
1. 1. The visual responses (ERG, evoked potentials of the optic chiasm, LGB and visual cortex) and the pupillary diameter were recorded simultaneously with each photic stimulation. 2. 2. Changes in the amplitude of the evoked responses along the visual pathways were produced by slight ocular movements. 3. 3. Spontaneous and centrally induced pupillary movements modified the visual responses. The magnitude of the b wave of the ERG and of the early deflection of the chiasmatic potential show a close relationship with the pupillary area. 4. 4. A facilitatory effect subsequent to the reticular stimulation which induces pupillary movements was observed in the ERG and the chiasmatic responses. 5. 5. When the pupils are paralyzed in mydriasis the stimulation of the mesencephalic reticular formation does not modify the amplitude of the ERG or of the chiasmatic potential. 6. 6. The change from miosis to mydriasis produces a lenthening in the excitability cycle of the retina. © 1964.
