Resumen:
Objective: Relevant aspects of non-opsonic phagocytosis of intracellular microorganisms, with special emphasis on Histoplasma capsulatum were reviewed in the present paper, considering that the participation of non-opsonic mechanisms influences the fate of microorganisms within the phagocytes. Introduction: Intracellular microorganisms can invade and survive inside host phagocytic cells due to several mechanisms used in their internalization, such as the presence of molecules on the cell surface or metabolic substances which neutralize and inhibit the microbicidal activities produced by the phagocytic host cells. Participation of glycosylated molecules, integrins and other molecules, in the macrophage invasion by microorganisms: Macrophage invasion by microorganisms through receptors independent from opsonins is generally successful, since this mechanism does not usually stimulate the oxidative burst; therefore, recognition of microinvaders through carbohydrate-interaction mechanisms seems to be the most effective invasive mechanism. Conclusion: The evaluation of these alternative invasion mechanisms would favor a better understanding of pathogenesis of many intracellular parasitic diseases that represent important health problems, i.e., histoplasmosis, tuberculosis, and leishmaniasis, among others.
