Resumen:
The strong-motion records from the September 1985 earthquake and its aftershocks, plus records from earlier earthquakes and teleseismic records, are being used as empirical data to guide analysis of the effects of the source mechanism, propagation path and the basin of Mexico City on the character of the observed ground motion. The methods of analysis are being tested and modified by comparison with the observations from the 1985 earthquakes. Next, they are being applied to the problem of determining estimates of the strong shaking expected when the last gap in the chain, the Guerrero gap, closes with the expected major or great earthquake. Findings are summarized.
