Resumen:
A phylogenetic study was carried out for the section Punctati of the
genus Lonchocarpus and related genera, based on molecular and
morphological data. The section Punctati is monophyletic and consists of
three geographically correlated clades (Mexico, Mexico-South America and
the West Indies), they are also characterized by different seedling
types. Nine new species of Lonchocarpus adamsii, L. antioquiensis, L.
brachyanthus, L. crassicalyx, L. grandifoliolatus, L. gyroides, L.
major, L. sumiderensis and L. tenorioi are described and illustrated,
based mainly on morphological evidence including that of the seedlings.
