MORPHOLOGY OF THE OVARY IN FROGS OF THE GENUS ELEUTHERODACTYLUS (ANURA: LEPTODACTYLIDAE).

Resumen:
The genus Eleutherodactylus in Cuba has 52 species of frogs that breed on land and have direct development. The description of the reproductive system, especially the morphology of their gonads, provides data on their adaptive radiation. Our objectives are to describe the morphology of the ovaries of six species of Eleutherodactylus: E. goini, E. planirostris, E. riparius, E. casparis, E. zugi and E. varleyi and find some evidence of the role of follicular cells in the process of growth of oocytes. Samples of ovaries of adult females were analyzed by light microscopy (brightfield and fluorescence) and electronic transmission. The results confirm that the morphology of the ovaries of the six species is similar to that of other amphibians. We distinguish three stages of oocytes in vitellogenesis.
