Onagraceae (Corsinipollis and Corsinipollis) fossil pollen recovered from Cenozoic paleobasins in Puebla and Baja California Sur, Mexico

Resumen:
Paleopalynological studies give information about the evolution of different plant group. Onagraceae is monophyletic and cosmopolitan. Nevertheless, most species are distributed in the American continent. Onagraceae pollen grains are very distinctive, and they could be easily recognized in fossil assemblages from Mexican Cenozoic basins. This is the first comparative morphologic study of the Onagraceae pollen grains recovered from Cenozoic paleobasins of Puebla and Baja California Sur States; it will complement the knowledge of fossil records in the southernmost of North America, contributing to its history. The present work gives information about the pollen diversity of Onagraceae in Mexican Paleogene/Neogene continental and marine basins. Moreover, based in palynological morphology of Corsinipollenites, botanic affinities with modern taxa such as Clarkia, Epilobium, Hauya and Ludwigia are proposed. In addition, Corsinipollis taxon is related to Ludwigia. Finally, taxa with pores slightly aspidates, related to Hauya and Ludwigia are plesiomorphic. Meanwhile, taxa with pores aspidates related to Epilobium and Clarkia are apomorphic.
