Resumen:
Since sudden cardiac death was identified as one of the main causes of mortality in adult, scientific studies have demostrated the inversely proportional relation between survival and delay in beggining treatment. In the sixties, group of experts developed guidelines for such situations and the first prehospital advanced life support units was created. After several decades of experience, the assessment of the obtained results have detected situations with long delays in starting treatment which make evident the need of involvement of first responder personnel, volunteers and relatives in the identification and assistances of these patients. In some countries formation programs on basic life support and use of semiautomatic external defibrilator (SEAD) have been developed. In this article we describe the use of SEAD and its contribution in the decrease of mortality of cardiac sudden death. We give a algorithm of use and analyse the most important studies on this sudject published in scientific literature.
