Resumen:
Craniopharyngiomas (CPs) are usually grossly well-circumscribed tumors; microscopically, the borders are frequently irregular and may be associated with gliosis in the adjacent brain tissue and Rosenthal fibers (RFs). The aim of this study was to analyze the craniopharynfingiomas' boundary and RFs in 115 cases. Retrospective analysis, clinical pathological and immunohistochemistry analysis. Levels of RFs were observed to be higher in adamantinomatous CPs than in the papillary type; RFs were associated with dystrophic calcification, wet keratin, and death, and correlated with inflammation (P=0.15), a higher microvascular density, and a bigger tumor size. A shorter time of outcome of the patients was correlated with brain infiltration, recurrence, tumor localization, tumor size, partial total exeresis, and inflammation. The level of Ki67-Li was higher in AdaCF than in the papillary type and was associated with dystrophic calcifications, wet keratin, and clef cholesterol. In conclusion, we found that RFs in CPs may be associated with inflammation and with a less favorable prognosis, and is independent of Ki67-Li and microvascular density activity. RFs in CP may be formed by stress and inflammatory mechanisms and are associated with a bad prognosis. © 2013 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
