Resumen:
This study estimates the monetary cost of caregiving - assumed by society and government - for functionally dependent older adults in Mexico. It is a secondary database analysis based on the Mexican Health and Ageing Study 2015 and the National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure 2016. The component costs included were: loss of labor income among unpaid caregivers, paid caregiver expenses, avoidable hospitalizations for primary care conditions, expenses on nursing homes, lost educational opportunities among underage caregivers and retired individuals providing care. Results indicate that the lack of a long-term care system for older adults in Mexico causes an annual cost of 2.430 billion dollars. This study aims to be an input to elaborate public policies by showing several major expenses that are mainly carried out by Mexican families. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.
