Resumen:
Functional relationship between health professional’s behavior and client’s behavior in interaction during a psychological intervention is important to identify how goals are achieved and treatment is successfully completed. The aim of the study was to analyze the interaction patterns between the health professional and the client according to the intervention process both in successful cases and in drop out cases. Sixteen psychologists and 16 clients with a history of alcohol abuse participated. A system of direct observation of the professionalclient interaction was used. The professionals videotaped each intervention session, with the prior informed consent of the clients. The data were analyzed from a microgenetic perspective, considering the stages of the intervention process. The results showed that there are variations in the individual behavior pattern and interaction throughout the intervention process, which suggests a dynamic process and the identification of effective patterns in the different stages of the intervention. The procedures required to promote the effectiveness of the intervention, the behavioral pa!erns related to it, and the implications of the findings in the process of translating behavioral principles into brief interventions are discussed. © 2022, Mexican Journal of Behavior Analysis.
