Resumen:
The article explores the heterogeneous reactions of the Inquisition tribunals in Spain and America between 1808 and their suppres. sion, decided by the Spanish Cortes, in 1813. The work shows the endeavour of the American tribunals to keep their activities in unfavourable times. It emphasises the failed resistance of the Inquisition of Cartagena de Indias and the efforts of the Mexican tribunal to reconstruct the Council of the Supreme in Cadiz.
