Structural reliability analysis of wind turbines for wind and seismic hazards in Mexico

Nowadays the use of wind farms to generate electricity has become an important issue around the world. In particular, due to the fact that Mexico has been committed (COP21, 2015) to increase the generation of electricity in 30% for 2024 by using clean energies, wind farms projects are growing for sustainable production of energy. In order to achieve safety designs of these structures, a reliability analysis requires special considerations to take into account both wind and seismic hazards. In this paper, a methodology to perform structural reliability analysis of wind turbines is presented. Reliability indexes for wind, seismic and combined hazards are compared in terms of the base bending moments. Selected results using contour maps for the whole country are presented and allow to point out that this type of structures can be strongly affected by both hazards, mainly depending on their frequency of occurrence and the design thresholds. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
