Resumen:
The present work describes basic aspects of the bypass in animal models. Technical features are described of interest to investigators and staff of hospitals where bypass circuits are handled in medical situations which make it necessary to support or temporarily replace the patient's circulatory function. The perfusionist should be an expert in the variety of equipment available to perform a bypass and is responsible of the control of physiological functions by monitoring and adjusting the necessary variables. He may also administer drugs according to the perfusion protocol and handle techniques such as hypothermia and hemodilution. The present report describes part of the available bypass equipment and some physiological aspects of this treatment. The basic principles to understand a bypass are explained.
