Resumen:
Background: Mycetoma is a subcutaneous, chronic, slow and progressive mycosis. Often it affects the lower extremities with the characteristic tumefaction, pseudonodules, deformity and fistules with exudate and grains. Objective: To describe histopathologic characteristics of actinomycetoma caused by Nocardia sp. diagnosed at the Dermatology Department of Hospital General Manuel Gea Gonzalez from 1981 to 1997. Material and methods: A retrospective and transversal study of actinomycetoma caused by Nocardia sp. during 1981-1997 was made. Results: Twenty-six patients were included, 20 male and six female, the mean age was 38.57 years with a range from 19 to 80 years. Leukocytoclastic vasculitis was observed in all the cases. Conclusions: The presence of thrombus on the affected vessels with leukocytoclastic vasculities was not relevant; however all the biopsies showed vessel obliteration or collapse, probably related to the edema and the vascular wall damage. Leukocytoclastic vasculitis in actinomycetoma by Nocardia sp. deserves further studies.
