Resumen:
Mexico is facing challenges due to rapid population aging. Economic
aspects are central. The 2014 National Household Income and Expenditure
Survey is used to depict the main mechanisms and determinants of
economic security in the population aged 65 and over. Differences by sex
are highlighted. The findings show the importance of government aid as a
source of resources, following by pensions among males and gifts
(transfers) among women. Income in old age is often insufficient,
especially for women. The variable which increases the probability of
being economically secure is being a one-person household, while being a
female decreases it the most.
