Resumen:
A series of surveys were conducted with the aim of characterizing the production system of rabbits in the peri-urban area in the region Los volcanes near Mexico City. The educational level of the rabbit producing the most was the elementary school (47%), this activity is considered additional income to the household economy. The daily tasks are performed by women and men get the main income as wage laborers. Breeding rabbits is associated with other domestic species such as pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks and dairy cattle. Production units have 9 adult animals, on average, and races were predominantly New Zealand and California. The main food source found was the combination of alfalfa (29%) and commercial feed (25%). All producers of natural breeding rabbits reported as the main method of reproduction. Main clinical signs reported were gastrointestinal (30%) and skin lesions (may be scabies) (51%). The market has found an important niche in the tourist corridor of Mexico City, although still very important target of rabbits for consumption. Rabbit production is possible in large cities and begin to reverse the concept of generating such waste.
