Resumen:
An algebraic formalism for nuclear collisions is proposed. An analysis of the scattering amplitude is made using the representations of the non-compact U(3, 1) group. This is the group of the relativistic harmonic oscillator. The values of the Casimir operator which labels the U(3, 1) representation are directly related to the radii of the interacting particles. The matter distributions and spins of the particles are given in terms of the configuration mixing among different U(3) levels. The interaction mechanism is parametrized in terms of the exchange of carriers of U(3, 1) quantum numbers. It is shown that the average value of the quantum numbers exchanged may be related to the time-delay, and the shape distortion of a cylindrical wave packet. In this way it is possible to give a simple and quantitative criterion for the "directness" of the nuclear reaction. The scattering of spinless particles is discussed in some detail and the non-relativistic limit of the expressions is given explicitly. © 1969.
