Resumen:
The present work had as objectives: a) to identify the communication patterns used by fathers, mothers and children in obese and normal-weight families; b) to evaluate the differences between the communication patterns in these two types of families. Ten nuclear families participated, five had at least one obese member and the rest had normal-weight members. The family dynamics were filmed, using the Minuchin (1957) methodology. The results suggest that in obese families: fathers use more mystification, tangency and meta-messages; mothers reject other's comments; and children emit more amalgamations and avoid conflicts. On the other hand, parents and children of normal-weight families use more verbal and body attentions. Regarding sex, it was found that obese women employ more mystification and obese men more tangency. Therefore, the communication in obese and normal-weight families differ greatly.
