Resumen:
Objective: To determine the efficacy of treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) with no evident lesion with either scleral buckling and cryotherapy, or vitrectomy and scleral buckling. Material and methods: Patients were randomised in two groups: scleral buckling and cryotherapy (group 1), vitrectomy and scleral buckling (group 2). Finding of the retinal lesion during surgery, postoperative retinal attachment, and causes of redetachment were evaluated. Results: 14 eyes were included, with an average duration of the detachment of 30.7 days, 8 in group 1, and 6 in group 2. During surgery, the causative retinal lesion was found in 62.5% of the patients in group 1 and in 66.6 of group 2. Retina remained attachment until the end of follow up in 62.5% and 50% respectively. Redetachment was present in 3 patients from group 1 and 3 in group 2, the latter due to proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Conclusion: The outcome was better with scleral buckling and cryotherapy although these results are not definitive because a bigger sample of patients is required.
