Evaluation of the polybutadiene content in some high-impact copolymers by transmission electron microscopy and digital image processing

Resumen:
A novel method for obtaining the rubber content of HIPS (high-impact polystyrenes) is presented and discussed. The method is based upon transmission electron microscopy and digital image processing and enables one to obtain the particle morphology, particle size distribution and percentage of rubber in the samples under analysis. Several commercially-available HIPS were studied and the results obtained with our method are compared to the nominal rubber content (provided by the manufacturer) and to NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) measurements. © 1991.
