Resumen:
It has been reported in the international literature that rape is a problem which has severe effects on the mental health and in the lives of the women who survived it. In our country, in spite of the great efforts made to consider this type of violence as a relevant social and health problem, there is little research about its impact in mental health. In consequence these cases are under-detected, their evaluations are inadequate, difficult to it is refer to them and in consequence, the risk of long time suffering increases. In general terms, rape is a 'traumatic event' due to the fear, terror, humiliation and risk of death or injury perceived frequently by the victims and because culturally the responsibility is attributed to the victim, producing guilt and shame. Also, in many occasions an stigmatizing treatment is received in the medical and justice institutions. That is why it is important to pay attention to the subjective experience of this type of violence, due to the fact that people - in this case, women - do not react towards a rape in the same form, but to their interpretations and the implications that they assign to the event. This paper presents the analysis of a woman who survived a rape, that is part of a broader study in which a qualitative methodology based in oral history has been used, particularly the tape-recorded interview. This report also shows the manifested psychological effects, after its classification according to particular categories of response, and other effects in different daily living areas that explain the difficulties and suffering that is generated by this type of violence.
