Resumen:
Pleurotus opuntiae is an edible mushroom sold wild in markets of central
Mexico and highly prized for its good taste; unfortunately, its
cultivation has been lagging due to lack of knowledge about the species
and its requirements. The goal of this work was to collect, isolate and
select strains of Mexican P. opuntiae to assess their production in
fermented substrates. Nine strains of P. opuntiae were isolated and a
selection was made by measuring mycelial growth on steam-pasteurized
substrates. Three fermented substrates were used: barley straw (PF),
sugar cane leafs (CF) and a combination 1:1 of them (PCF). Unfermented
substrates were used as controls: barley straw (P) sugar cane leafs (C)
and a mixture 1:1 of both (PC). Biological efficiency (EB) and
production rate (TP) of the selected strains and substrates were
evaluated. Two strains, IE 837 and IE 863, and two fermented substrates,
PF and PCF, were selected. The highest EB was obtained in PC for the
strains IE 863 with 105.21% and IE 837 with 86.15%. The highest TP was
obtained in PC with 7.03% and the lowest was showed in P with 4.43%.
P. opuntiae culture is promising, as EBs above 100% were obtained using
wild strains.' It is necessary to obtain more isolates of wild strains
and implement a breeding program for the pilot production of this
species.
